The Queen of Mourning。 Deep undercover, Nina Zenik risks discovery and death as she wages war on Fjerda from inside its capital。 But her desire for revenge may cost her country its chance at freedom and Nina the chance to heal her grieving heart。

King。 General。 Spy。 Together they must find a way to forge a future in the darkness。 Or watch a nation fall。

Seriously, this book just improves King of Scars。 Nina is in this one, again, so clearly it is already a great one。 But the visit to Ketterdam, the Darkling's whole thing, Alina coming back, and Zoya as a dragon (DRAGON) and the ending make this a great story。 I truly hope that there will be more of these, as I cannot imagine a life without another Grishaverse book。 DRAGONS PART 2! EDIT: lowered it to two stars, after reading some reviews that summed up my feelings much better than I ever could, making me realize I disliked a whole lot more than just the points I made。 Best to just read some of the 1 star reviews out there。Three stars, but barely。 For the longest time I thought it'd be a 4 star read at most due to (view spoiler)[the death of David (hide spoiler)] but then the whole (view spoiler)[Hanne dead-not dead-not Hanne manipulation (hide spoiler)] thing happened and EDIT: lowered it to two stars, after reading some reviews that summed up my feelings much better than I ever could, making me realize I disliked a whole lot more than just the points I made。 Best to just read some of the 1 star reviews out there。Three stars, but barely。 For the longest time I thought it'd be a 4 star read at most due to (view spoiler)[the death of David (hide spoiler)] but then the whole (view spoiler)[Hanne dead-not dead-not Hanne manipulation (hide spoiler)] thing happened and as much as I enjoyed certain parts of this book (view spoiler)[seeing the Crows was the absolute highlight for me, followed closely by Zoya becoming the dragon (hide spoiler)], it just leaves me feeling bitter。 On top of that I felt like it dragged a lot of the time, like the book just wouldn't end。 And then it ended with a promise of something I'd love to read about。 Typical。I almost DNFed twice。Perhaps three stars is still too generous。(view spoiler)[There was no point in killing David。 The one neurodiverse character (I will die on this hill; Bardugo used all the things neurotypical authors are so fond of when writing an autistic character) gets killed, for no other reason than shock value。 Anyone else could have died。 No one of importance could have died。 He could have just gotten gravely wounded and fight for his life and recover off page for the rest of the book。 But instead, Bardugo chose to kill him。 And I nearly DNFed right then and there。And then Hanne。 Killing her almost made me DNF again, because I was sure we were done with the bury your gays trope。 I was sure Bardugo was better than that。 It's why, even when I thought that Hanne might have died in Nina's absence, I never actually considered it。 And then it happened anyways, and I felt angry。 First David, now Hanne? What was the whole point of the romance, then? But, then of course it turned out that Hanne wasn't dead。 Great for us queers, sure, but also a fucked up manipulation of our emotions。 Of my emotions- I won't speak for anyone else。 And then it gets conflicting, because of the whole Hanne-is-a-lesbian-but-wait-Hanne-is-trans thing。 I loved the lesbian rep, the bi rep, them being together, but I also love the trans rep and people being who they really are (even if they're wearing someone else's face), and I am sad one had to replace the other in the end。 It kinda felt forced。 It was a plot point。 It's hard to put into words, so I hope it makes sense at all。 I adore Hanne no matter what, let that be clear, and I love their relationship so much! Man, what an incredible ride! It was heartbreaking and made me super angry, but it was also so good and full of so much wonderful storyline endings! This might be my favorite book of 2021。 I had the best time reading this, and the story was so well done that I couldn't put it down。 Not to mention the crossovers between all the different series。 Like, this was the kind of crossover between series I wish books like Shadowhunters and Sarah J。 Maas' books had。 The references, characters and the banter-oh the banter! The only thing I didn't love was Nina's character。 I fricking love Nina, she's one if my favorite Grishavere characters, but I didn This might be my favorite book of 2021。 I had the best time reading this, and the story was so well done that I couldn't put it down。 Not to mention the crossovers between all the different series。 Like, this was the kind of crossover between series I wish books like Shadowhunters and Sarah J。 Maas' books had。 The references, characters and the banter-oh the banter! This is a marvelous wrap-up to the story of Nikolai, Zoya, and Nina (like the first book in this duology, these are the main points of view, but there are some chapters that follow additional characters--I won't give those away in the review)。 I honestly could not put this book down--Nikolai remains one of my absolute favorite characters of the Grishaverse! However, I will say that Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom remain my favorites--nothing beats those dirty streets of the Barrel in Ketterdam! LEIGH。 She just DESTROYS me with these books。 I'm not going to lie, parts of the end felt a little bit fan-fictiony and just too over the top, even for fantasy。 But I also loved every second of it - and that the door is open for more Grishaverse books after this ending! This book broke me。 And then continued to throw things at me that I was not sure I could handle。 But in the end was very much worth the read。

Would give it 4 stars for the cameos and the very last page alone, but the character dynamics (I feel like Nikolai really shined in this one more than ever) and as always perfect world building is here too!
